Student Support Services
Psychological Services and School Based Counseling
School psychologists are mental health professionals who support students’ academic, social, emotional, and behavioral well-being in educational settings. They collaborate with educators, parents, and other professionals to create positive, safe, and supportive learning environments. Their role involves assessment, intervention, consultation, and prevention to address a wide range of student needs.
School-based counseling services focus on supporting the students’ mental health and social-emotional,skills within the school setting. These services aim to improve academic performance, attendance, and overall well-being. Typically, these services are delivered by school counselors, psychologists, social workers, and sometimes therapists from external agencies. They address a range of issues, from academic and social-emotional concerns to more serious mental health needs, and can include individual and group counseling, as well as referrals to community resources.

Speech-Language Therapy
Speech-Language therapy services are provided both through Response to Intervention and the Committee on Special Education. The speech-language therapist will conduct a screening or a more comprehensive assessment in the areas of articulation, voice, fluency, language development and processing. If a student is deemed eligible for speech/language therapy services by one of the committees listed above, the speech-language therapist will make a recommendation for an appropriate level of service delivery and goals will be developed. Progress is monitored regularly and notes sent home quarterly to the families.
Occupational Therapy
The purpose of school-based occupational therapy (OT) is to help students with disabilities or challenges to participate fully in their education and school related activities. OTs focus on developing the skills necessary for academic success, social participation, and daily living tasks within the school environment. They work to remove barriers to learning and promote students' overall well-being and independence. OT can be provided through either Response to Intervention or the CSE.
Physical Therapy
School-based physical therapy is provided in order to help students with disabilities participate fully in their educational program by addressing physical limitations that might hinder their access to learning and social interaction within the school environment. The focus of this service is on improving a student's ability to move, participate in classroom activities, and safely navigate the school setting, ultimately promoting their overall academic success and well-being.
In the WCSD, the related services follow a 3:1 service delivery model on a 6 day cycle schedule whereby 3 cycles of direct therapy services are followed by 1 cycle of indirect services which can take the form of consults with teachers and staff, collaboration with other therapists, completing assessments or providing make-up sessions.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s provider with any questions or concerns.
